A Baldur’s Gate 3 player recently stumbled upon a shocking discovery while playing the game. In an attempt to test the game’s limits, the player deliberately got rid of a crucial item in Act 3 and found themselves triggering a remarkably dark game over screen.

While players are unable to throw away a Netherstone directly, they can place it into a container and throw that instead. By tossing the container with the Netherstone into an abyss, a cutscene is triggered where The Emperor berates the player for their foolishness and warns them that the stones are crucial for victory against the Elder Brain.
In a shocking twist, the Elder Brain then appears and transforms the player into a mind flayer, sealing the Sword Coast's fate. The game over screen reads “A Netherstone is lost. The only path now leads to her…” and gives players the option to load a previous save.

It's worth noting that this particular game over scenario is unlikely to occur accidentally, as players actively have to go out of their way to lose a Netherstone.
